Beekeeping on BioQuarter
It’s buzzing on BioQuarter. Our resident beekeepers from the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) were recently alerted to a swarm of bees in the parking area of NINE building – and not bees from the existing CRM rooftop apiary.
With the help of Arran Ellis, NINE and BioCubes’ Facilities Manager, the swarm were safely collected. This is excellent news for BioQuarter (and the bees) as after a harsh winter and terrible spring many of the resident bees on the rooftop of CRM were lost
The bees have now been relocated on the CRM roof in one of the empty hives and seem to be doing well. They have joined two other new colonies which have recently arrived from King’s Building, thanks to a grant from the University of Edinburgh’s sustainability team to repopulate the apiary.
Bees are the world’s most important pollinator and are vital for stable, healthy food supplies. It is estimated that one third of the food we consume each day relies on pollination. However, many bee species are currently in decline as a result of bee-killing pesticides and destruction of habitats.
By providing a safe space for bees to live and forage, CRM is aiming to create a more sustainable and socially responsible environment.
