On a daily basis, clinical-academics meet life sciences entrepreneurs, and health data analysts link with NHS clinicians.

Health and life sciences entrepreneurship is alive and kicking at Edinburgh BioQuarter, and across Scotland, however ensuring the adoption and spread of innovation is a major challenge for the NHS. Such innovation comes at a cost during a time of pressure and competing demands on the healthcare system.

So, just how important is innovation to the NHS? Hear from a panel of experts who will share their amazing stories of medical innovation; while assessing the challenges, pitfalls and opportunities for the NHS as we head into a new decade of discovery.

Speakers:

Dr Jamie Coleman | Jamie is Founder and Chair of CodeBase, the UK’s largest tech incubator, with a portfolio of companies which have raised in excess of half a billion dollars of investment and created over 800 jobs in Edinburgh in the last 5 years.  He was the Founder of the Turing Festival; a Board member of The Edinburgh International Festival and a Board Member of ScotlandIS and CoFounder of a £150M venture capital fund.  He is currently a Board Member of the Creative Industries Federation and CoFounder and COO of UltraHuman, an Immuno Oncology Drug Discovery company developing best in class antibodies to treat multiple cancers.

Prof Kev Dhaliwal | A previous graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Kev is now Professor of Molecular Imaging and Healthcare Technology at the University and a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine where he subspecialises in Pulmonary Infection and Tuberculosis.  He leads a translational group working across multiple disciplines and is currently performing translational research in collaboration with the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.  Kev is the Chief Investigator of 6  ‘first in human’ trials of optical molecular imaging reagents and devices. He collaborates widely with industry and is passionate about translating physical sciences into healthcare and developing innovation pathways.

Dr Catherine Stables | Catherine is a data scientist interested in innovative ways to collect and use data to improve health and care. Following an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, she obtained her PhD in cardiovascular science from King’s College London. Catherine is currently working on various data and digital health projects at the University of Edinburgh, including bringing together health and social care data from across South East Scotland to drive innovation; curating large cardiology datasets; and developing apps for clinical data collection. Catherine is also the lead curator of the One HealthTech Edinburgh hub – a global, volunteer-led, grassroots community that inspires, and champions diversity in healthtech.
